We spent a wonderful afternoon with kindred spirits Tami (@ketolistic) and Dave (@kato_baggins_photography) who are full-time travelers (@see_my_happiness), entrepreneurs and #keto/#carnivore. We’ve never met in person but have been following each other on IG for some time now and Dave recognized our rig parked across from them. It’s a small world!

No Maneje Cansado. The road signs on Mexican highways insist: Don’t drive tired. We witnessed a semi truck run off the road right in front of us. Thankfully there was a wide, gentle sloping shoulder and no one was seriously injured.

The tractor-trailer was in front of us and I saw him weave in to the left lane. That was the first sign things were not good. A few seconds later he drifted slowly off to the right, across the shoulder and then on to the dirt and grass. At this point we were all yelling “oh sh*t!" and I was hitting the brakes. He was braking in the dirt but couldn’t stop before hitting a culvert pretty hard. What looked like a fairly new Volvo tractor was totaled. Diesel fuel was squirting from a hole in the tank. The driver was in shock. Several other semi-truck drivers stopped immediately after me and, not having good enough Spanish, I made sure they didn’t need me and left the scene.

This could have been many times more tragic if he veered to the left and crossed the opposing traffic lanes. Or if the slope of the shoulder was steep (which is mostly the case) and he rolled the tractor and trailer. He, us and everyone on the road, were super lucky.

Although the driver was negligent I do feel sorry for him. He will most likely lose his driving job and may put his family finances in jeopardy. Falling asleep at the wheel can be horrible in any vehicle but these big trucks leave very little margin for errors.

Howdy y’all. A few days ago we crossed back in to the US via Laredo, Tejas.

My posting makes it look like we’re still in Mexico but I’m just slow and behind.

For the record: We spent five months in Mexico and had ZERO problems. No thefts or beheadings. In fact, quite the opposite: warm, friendly, generous people and beautiful landscapes and cities. I’ll blog about our experience soon and will post here when I do.

We are having serious “Mexico withdrawals” and really miss being there. We’ll definitely be back.

San Miguel de Allende is another UNESCO World Heritage Site and stands on it’s own as a beautiful, friendly town rich with history - San Miguel was the first Mexican town to gain its independence from Spain. We divided our time here between the RV park outside of town and an Airbnb in the middle of the action.

Beautiful colors, wonderful people, many celebrations, good food & music, art and mild weather (elevation 1,900m / 6,234ft) made this a special (and long) stop for us.

What a great pleasure meeting Marcus and Julie (@tucks_truck) in San Miguel de Allende. They’ve been on the road five years and have visited 46 countries!! We’ve been on the road 14 months and visited 2 countries! 😜

An awesome and inspiring couple!

I learned so much talking with them. Two standouts for me. First, and this is important to all you new diesel truck owners: they have not had trouble finding ULSD in all their travels. The conventional wisdom on high sulfur diesel is dated or mostly in isolated areas. More important is to have large capacity (e.g. 400 liters or so) to get between ULSD stations.

Second is that they’ve had no trouble using RORO’s to ship their vehicle. This versus building a vehicle to fit inside a container. Encouraging for big truck owners.

Guanajuato City, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most beautiful cities I’ve ever seen. Anywhere. Oddly it’s not full of foreign tourists like its neighbor San Miguel de Allende which made it even better.
